Buying smart home devices that still work in five years
Cloud dependence, standards, and the failure modes worth thinking about before you put a computer in the front door lock.
The category has a bad habit. A company sells a device, runs the servers it depends on for a few years, gets acquired or loses interest, and switches them off. The hardware on your wall is fine. The service that made it work is gone, and there is nothing you can do about it.
This has happened often enough to be a known risk rather than bad luck, and it is the main thing to design around. A useful question before any purchase: if this company disappeared tomorrow, what would this device do?
Local control is the whole ballgame
Some devices do their thinking inside your house. A switch talks to a hub in the hallway, the hub decides, and the light comes on — the internet is only involved when you are away or updating firmware. Others send every button press to a data center and wait for permission to come back. The second kind is at the mercy of a business decision, and it also stops working when your broadband does.
You can usually tell which you have with one test: turn off the internet at the router, leave the local network running, and see what still responds. Do this in the return window. A lamp that will not switch on because a server in another country is unreachable is a lamp you should send back.
Interoperability standards have improved this, and it is worth understanding the layers. Some standards describe the language devices speak so that products from different companies can work together. Others describe the radio mesh they speak it over, which is how battery-powered sensors reach a hub without wifi. A device that supports a widely adopted standard can usually be adopted by a different app later, which is the closest thing to insurance this category offers.
Rank devices by what happens when they fail
Every connected device eventually misbehaves. What matters is the consequence, and that is a good way to decide how much caution a purchase deserves.

This ordering also tracks how much you will regret an ecosystem change. Replacing four smart plugs is a Saturday. Replacing the lock, the doorbell, and the thermostat because their app was discontinued is a project.
The boring wins
The devices households keep using are unglamorous. Motion-triggered lights on a stairway and in a hallway. A plug that turns a lamp on at dusk. A leak sensor under the dishwasher and behind the washing machine, which costs very little and can save a floor. A door sensor that tells you the garage was left open. A thermostat with a schedule that matches when anyone is actually home.
What gets abandoned is the automation that demands attention, the one triggered by conditions too specific to fire reliably, and anything that made a working manual task slower. If you find yourself narrating a routine to a speaker across the room while holding a light switch, the switch was better.
- Prefer smart switches over smart bulbs in rooms where someone will flip the wall switch out of habit — a smart bulb with the power cut is just a bulb.
- Count the batteries before you buy. Twenty battery-powered sensors means changing a battery most months, forever.
- Check that the device does something useful with no account at all, even if you intend to make an account.
- Avoid features that only exist behind a subscription unless you are content to pay for them indefinitely — particularly with cameras, where recording history is usually the paid part.
- Buy one, live with it for a month, then buy the other five. Enthusiasm at the beginning is what produces drawers of abandoned hardware.
Security, in proportion
A smart device is a small computer that is always on, and cheap ones are frequently abandoned by their makers without ever receiving a security update. That is a real risk and it is not usually a dramatic one — the realistic outcome is a device conscripted into someone else's network, not a burglar reading your motion sensors.
Sensible precautions are cheap. Put connected devices on a guest network if your router supports one, so that a compromised plug cannot see the laptop with your tax returns on it. Use a unique password on every device account. Turn on two-factor authentication for the ones that matter, especially anything with a camera or a lock. And do not forward ports to a device from the open internet, which is the one configuration that turns a low risk into a genuine one.
Cameras deserve their own thought. Anything pointed at an interior room is a live feed of your home held by a company you did not vet. Placement is the honest control here: outward-facing cameras, hallways rather than bedrooms, and a hard look at whether you want a microphone in that room at all.
Written down, this reads more cautious than it feels in practice. Smart lighting and a few sensors are among the small pleasures of a house, and they cost almost nothing to try. The caution is really only about the devices you cannot easily undo — the ones wired into the wall, the ones holding the door shut, and the ones you would have to explain to whoever buys the house next.
